New Year - New Me!

A whole new you!

For most of us the prospect of a new year means fresh starts and new beginnings.

Another year means another chance to do all those things we failed to see through, a term we like to refer to as our ‘New Years Resolutions’, promises and dedications made to ourselves to achieve in the year that follows. These resolutions can vary from anything as small as to eating less chocolate to the more grievous task of quitting smoking.

So does it work?

For most of us mere mortals the majority of our resolutions are sadly left unfulfilled. The problem with these self revelations is the time span we have given ourselves. One year, a whole three hundred and sixty five days, that’s more than enough time to complete our goals right?

And herein lies the trouble. The majority of us like to procrastinate, be it making that appointment to the dentist or quitting your job to pursue your real ambitions, there always seems to be something preventing you from doing it. We all have those daily obligations that need to be completed before we can even think about changing our ways.

  • “Procrastination is opportunity's natural assassin." ~Victor Kiam[1]

The problem that most of us face is the idea of fixing a future version of ourselves, rather than what we can do for right now.

So what’s the point in making New Year’s Resolutions?

  • “Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other” - Abraham Lincoln[2]

There is nothing wrong with having long terms goals, in fact they are beneficial to each and every one of us. But when doing so bear in mind that motivation and determination are huge factors in your success. Instead of thinking that you will go to, quit that or make this happen, ask yourself how it can be done. Put into motion realistic steps that you know are achievable in your current lifestyle.

Whether you set yourself a time frame within each day or week to get started on your resolution or gradually cut down on that bad habit each day, the fact of the matter is that if you stick at it and make regular commitments to your goal, anything is possible. The best thing you can ask of yourself is that you believe that you can and want to do it.

Because,

  • "Until you value yourself, you will not value your time. Until you value your time, you will not do anything with it." ~ M. Scott Peck[3]
